Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index - EEXI
The Existing Ship Energy Efficiency Index (EEXI) is a measure introduced by the IMO to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships. EEXI is a measure related to the technical design of a ship. Vessels must obtain EEXI approval once in a lifetime, for the first periodical survey no later than 2023.
The requirement for the calculation of the EEXI factor applies to ships of 400 gross tonnage and above engaged on international voyages, of the specific types defined in Regulation 23. The ship is required before the first annual, intermediate or renewal air pollution prevention survey (Annex VI, Chapter 3, MARPOL ), or initial energy efficiency/carbon intensity certification (Annex VI Chapter 4, MARPOL MC), whichever is the first on or after 1 January 2023, calculate the achieved EEXI using the following formula:
This calculation and all the information required for the vessel are indicated in the "EEXI Technical File", compiled at least in English in accordance with IMO Resolution MEPC.334(76). The EEXI technical file must be sent to the Administration or an Organization acting on its behalf for verification.
The achieved EEXI (Attained EEXI) must be less than or equal to the required EEXI (Required EEXI) for a particular type of vessel, taking into account its size:
If the calculations showed that the achieved EEXI is greater than the required EEXI, then it is necessary to take measures to improve the energy efficiency of the ship:
The EEXI survey of the ship must be carried out at the first periodic or initial survey as above on or after 1 January 2023. The ship's compliance with the new Amendments will be confirmed by issuing a new International Ship Energy Efficiency Certificate (IEE Certificate).

Navalista carries out the following types of work:
For a ship of 400 gross tonnage and less than 5000:
- Calculation of the energy efficiency coefficient for existing ships (Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index - EEXI)
- Preparation of the EEXI Technical File (EEXI Technical File)
- Updating Part I, Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan - ESMP Management Plan - SEEMP)
For a ship of 5,000 gross tonnage and above:
- Calculation of the energy efficiency coefficient for existing ships (Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index - EEXI)
- Preparation of the EEXI Technical File (EEXI Technical File)
- Update of Part II, Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP), including:
- Description of the methodology to be used to calculate the ship's Attained Annual Operational Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the procedure for reporting the data to the ship's Flag Administration or Recognized Organization;
- Required Annual Operational Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) for the next three years as specified in Regulation 28 of the Amendments;
- A plan documenting how the Required Annual Operational Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) will be achieved in the next three years;
- Self-assessment and improvement process.
